Online Gaming History

Part of my moving process is sorting through everything I have and choosing how to pack it away.  Somethings I will move with me, some will be stored away, and other things  just get pitched.  One of the many stacks I have to sort through is a pile of CDs containing applications, games, and backups from over the years.  It is almost like opening a window into my past.  The copies of software I had to have which I can no longer use.  The games I needed yet no longer want to play.  I find the selection of MMORPG’s the most interesting.  Starting back in 1997 with Ultima Online the games step through my late teens and early twenties.  Representing the hours upon hours I committed to them.

I had just graduated from high school when Ultimate Online came out.  We would play in the evenings for an hour or two.  Then get together once a week and play into the morning.  This cycle repeated for most of the games in my list of MMORPG’s I have played.  I spent hours staring into those online alternative realities.  Sometimes avoiding real life.  Other times  just doing something that I loved.

Dark Age of Camelot was my favorite game, having played a variety of characters within its realm over the years.  Yet it was not my favorite game because of the game play.  More than any other world it seemed to have a unique ability to bring groups of people together on quests, missions, or just random hunting parties.  I met people there I never would in my real life.  People from all over the United States and the world.  I never thought I would do that in my life.  My reality was living in the midwest and I couldn’t imagine, at the time, living anywhere else.  Amazing how things change over time.

New camera

Well over a year ago I decided I need something more than my little point and shoot Canon.  Before I left for Washington D.C. the summer after 8th grade my dad bought a 35mm film camera for me.  It was a cheaper plastic camera we bought at a drug store a couple weeks before I left.  He told me that trip could be a once in a life time experience I should try to remember the rest of my life.  He was right and photography has been a hobby of mine ever since.

Since then I have owned several cameras and taken thousands of pictures.  Yet, photography has always only been a hobby of mine.  Something I did to record events throughout my life, but nothing I really wanted to publish.  That started to change when I began playing ultimate Frisbee.  There is something about a Frisbee flying through the air that just screams photography and somewhere in the back of my mind my feelings about capturing imagery started to change.  Then, in 2008 I took a picture of the sun setting behind a sailing ship.  After taking that picture I realized just how much I enjoy taking pictures for fun and that meant I needed a better camera.

It took a long time to buy that camera.  I didn’t want to just buy anything and I wanted to find a good deal on what I wanted.  Turns out cameras are just like buying computers.  Every year something new is coming out and if you sit waiting you will be waiting forever.  While waiting I found a photography podcast I really enjoy called This Week in Photography (TWiP) which really helped me in the buying process.  While listening to their weekly podcast I narrowed down which camera and lenses I needed to buy.  In the end I decided to buy a Canon T2i (Canon 550D) kit and a Canon 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 IS Telephoto Lens.  I could not be happier with my purchase.  Owning a DSLR has been a much better experience than I could have imagined.  Gone is the frustration of the short 3x or 4x zoom on my point and shoot.  I could only dream about taking pictures of the moon before.  I have a lot to learn about using my camera, but I am looking forward to it.  That was one reason I went with the cheaper lens.  I can always upgrade later and I do not know what the future holds with my photography.

I really plan on using this camera once I am in Germany.  I have several projects I am interested in which will rely on using the features of my new camera.  We will just have to see what my future holds.

My departure date is coming soon

I just finished reading through the WordPress website about the first steps in creating a good blog.  It offers the following questions to answer before you start posting to your site:

  1. What am I going to do with this?
  2. Who is going to read this?
  3. What kinds of information will I be posting?
  4. Why am I doing this?
  5. Who am I doing this for?
  6. How often am I going to be posting and adding information?

Before I began this website I thought about questions similar to these.  What is my reason for creating this space?  Why would people want to know about my life?  Especially people who don’t know me personally.  I finally decided that the next steps in my life are fairly unique within my circle of friends and perhaps that means it will be interesting.  Maybe by sharing my life someone else will have an easier time doing the same thing.  In the end it doesn’t really matter why I write it.  As long as I get some personal satisfaction out of creating it.

Since it is still several weeks before I leave the United States I really do not have much to write about right now.  I have a lot going on, but nothing really interesting to write about.  Sorting through past memories and all the stuff associated with it.  As I get closer to moving day I would imagine I will have more interesting and relevant news to discuss.  Each day I get more excited than the last.

Americans’ Image of Germany

While looking through the German Missions website I found an article titled Americans’ Image of Germany Reaches New High.  According to the article Americans’ appreciate Germany more now than at any point since September 2002.

Quote from the article:

American perceptions of Germany have been steadily improving since a dip in 2003.  The latest survey shows that 48 percent of Americans rate their image of Germany and the Germans as excellent or good.  That is the highest value since the German Information Center began asking the question in 2002. The political relationship between Germany and America also gets high marks, with 41 percent of respondents rating it excellent or good.

California View (Oceania)

Nature provides breathtaking vistas almost anywhere you go.  Yet few places I have been provide the diversity of California. Being from the Midwest portion of the United States my daily life consists of farm land to pastures to small mountains such as the Ozark Mountains in southern Missouri. The nearest body of water would have been my neighbors’ pond or the relative vastness of Lake Michigan in the Great Lakes.

Being a person who loves geography I knew California provided a unique collection of landscapes you cannot find anywhere else. I realized the oceans are vast and encompassing. Yet that did not prepare me for experiencing the ocean and mountains and valleys up-close and personal and so close together.

Sunset from Muir Beach Overlook

In this post I want to highlight my experience with the Pacific Ocean.  I have seen the Atlantic Ocean from the sandy beaches of the Florida coast and out the window from 30,000 feet, but to stand a stones throw away from waves crashing upon the rocks is an inspiring experience.  Being so close to the raw forces of nature makes you feel alive.  Makes you realize humanity is a small portion of this world.

In the picture to the right you see a Pacific sunset from Muir Beach Overlook north of San Francisco.  This picture was taken Saturday March 6, 2010 about an hour before sunset.  That evening the waves peacefully lapped against the shore as the sun approached the waters edge. The tranquil view took me back to days sitting on Vesper Hill watching the sunset among the Ozark Mountains.  I love how a blazing ball of fury can create something so peaceful.

In the picture to the right I am standing about 50 feel above sea level and a hundred feet away from the waves cresting over the outer rocks.  Something this picture does not do justice.  I have never been so in awe and trilled by a force in nature in my life.  The pure energy the waves exact upon those stones daily is just amazing.  Each wave striking every stone, receding away, then raising up again. Creating a majestic scene of raw power.  I have to admit I was nervous while taking some pictures closer to the waves.  I have never before been so close to a primal force of nature.  When you watch the same scene on TV you do not get the proper sense of power.  I could not imagine just how amazing the ocean was to behold until I stood upon its threshold.  I walked down as far as I dared (the green plant edge) before turning back.  If I had not been alone I would have climbed down to the waters edge and experienced the full force of the ocean from the dry rocks (light colored).  I realized that was foolish to attempted alone and I cannot wait to go back and visit the Pacific again.
