Design Exposition: Tomorrows Visuals (Part 3)

Industrial Design

If you do not know what industrial design is go read the Wikipedia article.  Basically it is using design to improve usability, functionality, and brand development of a product.  This was probably the most interesting section to me.  I would include pictures, but I do not feel right presenting someone else’s project.  Mostly because I am not here to promote something someone else might want to market themselves.

One group within the University was tasked with making a kitchen which would fit within a 1 meter square space and allow several people to prepare and serve a meal.  I think the project was focused toward apartment dwellers who do not have a lot of space.  Most of the projects seemed to revolve around everything required for a kitchen shoved into it counter top minus the fridge.  Most were not something I would want in my kitchen because they were to limiting.  One design which I liked involved a round center section which had three different counter tops you could swivel into different positions.

My favorite kitchen happened to be designed by a friend of ours.  It was completely unlike the other kitchens because it was just a single counter.  Before I start describing my favorite kitchen I should write about how German apartments vary from their American counterparts.  When I rented my first apartment in the United States it included a stove, fridge, and most surprisingly a kitchen sink.  I say surprisingly because our German apartment included NOTHING.  Just a room with four walls and some capped pipes for the sink on one wall.

So, onto my favorite kitchen design.  Like I said it was basically a single counter covered by a silicone membrane, yet it contains so much.  Within the counter surface are several burners.  Creating a very smooth, clean, cooking surface.  Off to one side there is a sink and you can store pots and pans within the legs.  Now, my honest impression is I would not buy this kitchen to create my everyday meals.  I could see where it would fit into the lifestyles of some people, but not into mine.  Where I would love to have this kitchen is within my garden or at the campgrounds.  It splits into three parts and could easily be transported in a small car or trailer.  Setup would be quick and easy, and everything would be contained in one convenient spot.  You could be boiling corn and potatoes on your counter while the burgers are cooking on the fire AND have everything within your reach.

I realize my words do little justice to my friends project.  Maybe after he reads this I will be asked to post a picture of the project.

Artistic Design

The last second I am going to talk about is what I will chunk together as Artistic Design.  I am throwing everything into here that was basically created for the pure purpose of art.  Almost every project had a artistic component to it.  As any good design will have.  Yet, some sections of the exposition were purely done for arts sake.  Especially in the sculpture section.  The picture to the right was my favorite.  We found it while walking out one side of a building.  If I owned dogs like these two I would have bought this metal sculpture on the spot.  There were other things like a painting with people and their pet chickens, a camp out in a bottle, or the stairway into the celling from the tar covered floor.

Conclusion

I had a great time visiting Halle.  Especially evident by my ability to recall details about the weekend months later.  I hope I get another opportunity to do something like this again.  Plus, I cannot wait to write more articles about places I have visited.  I enjoyed this glimpse into Halle, Germany.  I hope you did too.

A complete A1 exam

German A1 Exam

German A1 Exam

Today concluded our two days worth of testing for the A1 exam.  Yesterday was the listen, read, and write section.  Surprisingly, I did not feel very nervous before this section of the test.  I was a bit apprehensive about how I would do because I still find reading German a little difficult.  Words are not just jumping into my head like I want them to, but I am improving every day.  Fortunately, I believe, I understood most of the questions on this section and hopefully answered them correctly.

After spending two hours taking the test we spent the remainder of class continuing our book lessons.  I think most people, including me, were more interested in going home but it is important to not stop.  I am slowly downloading German into my brain and everyday spent hearing someone else speak is another day closer to becoming fluent myself.  While packing up my stuff at the end of the day the instructor complimented me on how far I have come since July.  It is amazing what you can achieve with practice.  Plus, that comment made my day.

Today we finished with the spoken portion of the A1 exam.  Unlike yesterday I was extremely nervous about todays outcome.  I know eventually this will change, but right now I slightly freeze when trying to speak in German.  It goes back to German words not jumping into my head.  I know with more practice this will go away, but in the mean time I am dealing with it.  For example, because I was so nervous I had a hard time relating the “about me” details I had memorized.  Last night I recited the entire speech to Anni without a hiccup.  Yet, during my portion of the exam I couldn’t remember a single word.  Fortunately most of it returned eventually.

Keep your collective fingers crossed that I passed.

Ich heiße Matt…..

A lot has been going on in the last 20 or so days.  I bothers me I have not written since the first, but nothing to be done about that now.  To begin with the A1 test is coming up next week.  The A1 is the first language test which is required to live and work in Germany.  Below is a sample of something I will probably write or repeat during the test:

Ich heiße Matt.  Ich habe früher in den USA gewohnt.  Ich habe fünf Monate in Deutschland gewohnt.  Ich habe als Web-Designer gearbeitet.  Ich bin verheiratet. Ich habe keine Kinder. Ich spreche Englisch und ein bisschen Deutsch.

This is probably poor of me to write, but I will be surprised if I pass the A1 test.  Unless the standards for the A1 are lower than I expect of myself.  None of the components seem that difficult.  I have just always had a hard time learning spoken languages.  Some people can hear a word or phrase and have it memorized.  For me, I have never been able to do this.  Concepts, sure, but not a spoken language.  Every week I am improving and before the year is out I’m sure I can pass the A1 and A2 tests.

I have more to write, but I should be getting back to studying.  Tomorrow we are writing a practice test.  Than the A1 will be next week.  I imagine I’ll need to take a break tomorrow afternoon and I plan on finally releasing that last article from my Halle trip.  Hopefully you will enjoy reading it.

German Classes: Another Semester

Note: These are thoughts and images from Monday, August 31, 2010. I did not have time to get a blog post written on Monday.  Better late than never.

Monday I started up German language classes again.  I was a bit nervous about going to class because I have not studied very much this last six weeks.  Fortunately the instructors do a great job making sure everyone keeps up.  The day went really well considering.

A rainy day rainbow

A rainy day rainbow

It was a rainy day Monday and I rode my bike to class.  I was running a couple minutes late and the rain was not improving my mood.  Before the six week break started I had given the instructors my website card so they could read this blog if they wanted to.  During class she mentioned reading something on my website and it cheered me up.  I love it when people mention reading my blog.  It takes some effort to put my thoughts into words and recognition makes it all worthwhile.  I wish more people would comment on the articles directly, but getting feedback offline and in other places is just as great.

As I mentioned Monday was a rainy day.  I wish the rain would just stop since it has been raining on and off for a while now.  Reminds me of last summer when it seemed to rain every Tuesday.  Except this is a little more frequent.  Sunday we went to an outdoor concert in front of the Dom (Catholic Church).  It poured through most of the concert and we were not allowed to have an umbrella out.  Thankfully they passed out plastic ponchos for everyone.  Even with the poncho I got soaked.

Evening sky after a rainy day

Monday afternoon it finally quit raining and the sun came out.  That is when I shot the rainbow picture above.  I am lucky I noticed it was there.  The curtains were pulled and I am not sure why I was looking out the window.  The evening sky picture to the right was taken an hour or two later from the other side of our house.  I love sunset pictures.  Even if you cannot see the sun.
