Schnecke (Snail)

A snail

A snail

Anni’s parents have this amazing grape vine growing on the side of their house.  I believe they planted it when the house was built some 20 years ago.  For a while now we have been eating grapes directly from the vine and bringing more home after our visits.

Unlike store bought grapes, these grapes contain seeds.  Seeds leave you with two options, spitting them out or swallowing them down.  I choose the lazy route of swallowing them down.  Fortunately for Anni she choose the higher road last weekend.  Having this nice collection of grape seeds when suddenly one decided to crawl away.  We both started laughing once we realized that seed was actually a snail.

The more you hear…

A lot of people have told me I should listen to the radio to help with my spoken of German.  The theory being the more you hear something the better you will be.  There is only one slight problem though.  Most music stations broadcast songs in English.  I tend to mix my German and English a lot and hearing a lot of English on the radio does not seem to help.

The first time I came to Germany I went to a showing of Starlight Express.  It is a musical, on skates, and being a musical in Germany strangely enough it was mostly sung in German.  After we left my friends asked if I liked the English songs during the play.  I had not even noticed anything was sung in English.  Since that day I have never expected myself to easily switch between the two languages.  Since I started my German intensive course this has gotten a lot better, but I still have room for improvement.

A TV is like a window. Both let you view beautiful things sometimes.

A TV is like a window. Both let you view beautiful things sometimes.

As an alternative to the radio we have been thinking about getting a TV.  In the United States having a TV is like breathing air.  Almost everyone I know has one and a lot of people watch it every night.  Since April I have not missed the TV very much.  Only a couple shows on the Syfy Channel, but nothing else.  If anything I miss watching movies on something bigger than my laptop.

The hardest part of finding a TV is research.  Most of the outlets I am used to from the United States do not list European products.  Maybe it is the exact same product, but carries a different numeric identification between Europe and the US.  This is the case with my camera.  The only variation between the US and European models was the documentation and the chargers power cord.  My love for electronics does help out.  I believe I already found the TV model I want.  Now, just to figure out if/where I can buy it.

Vacation 2010: The weather & more

I am not sure how I feel about bloggers discussing the weather.  I think that is a topic which comes up when there is nothing else to say.  Yet, I have a lot to write about and it just so happens to involve the weather.

Last night we shared our vacation pictures with Anni’s parents.  We spent a long time talking about our vacation, places I have lived or visited in the United States, and where we might vacation next.  I even mixed a lot of German into the conversation and that made me happy!

Looking through the pictures last night really brought to mind just how cold it is here in Germany.  Todays high was about 9°C (48°F) while at Wrightsville Beach, NC (see vacation picture) it was 24°C (75°F).  Unfortunately, Wrightsville Beach is much further south than Germany which explains most of the weather differences.  Considering how chilly it has been here for many months I would love to have those warmer temperatures in Germany.  It is already approaching freezing over night.  Today was even cold enough I wanted a scarf while walking to class.  Something I would have never thought about in Missouri.  Even in the colder winter months.

Like I said earlier discussing the weather is pretty much a non-topic, but it leads me to a significant thought.  When people ask me how living in Germany compares to the United States I always say they are similar: people have cars, go to restaurants, shop, etc.  All of those things most people expect wrapped into daily life.  Yet, for me, there is an indescribable difference between a German and an American.  I always equate it to culture, but that really is a simple word for a complex description.  Of course two groups of people go about life differently.  The weather is just another one of those things that brings out the differences in my new surroundings.

Flying to the USA at 36,000 feet

Flying to the USA at 36,000 feet

You probably think I have been ignoring the blog again this month.  And you are absolute right.  Fortunately, I had a pretty good reason.  We spent the last two weeks visiting family and friends in the United States.  Plus, seeing several attractions in the mountains of North Carolina.  I think we drove around 2,500 miles (4,023 km) between North Carolina and Missouri.

Besides seeing a lot of scenery go past the car windows, we captured around 1,800 pictures during our vacation.  Which is about 10 GB of space on my hard drive.  I have not been over the pictures yet.  I will start combing through all the shots next week.  As I look through the pictures I will be posting articles about some of the locations we visited.
