My digital life

First off, I am sorry this did not make it out over the weekend.  I have been setting aside time on Sunday’s to write, but yesterday I was consumed with cleaning up a backup hard drive.  I found pictures I have not seen in years.  And the collection of documents was staggering.  I am not even close to being finished with the project yet, but at the very least everything is stored in appropriate folders so that it can be backed up correctly.

Which got me to thinking about how everyone else keeps their digital life.  How many pictures do you have stored on your computer?  The first pictures of your children or that paper you wrote on the meaning of life.  Do you have this backed up anywhere else?

I realize talking about backing up your files is very boring.  Probably not even on topic for a blog about my life in Germany.  Yet, going through that hard drive was very important for me.  I had files, important files, stored on there that were no where else.  When that hard drive fails they might have been lost forever.  Now they are safe and secure in multiple locations, both digitally and physically.

Recording and storing my digital life is important.  If not for the world, at least it is for me.  For example, how many people read about the events in Egypt over the weekend?  100 years ago would we have known about it so quickly, or at all?  We each have a story to tell and those stories add up into the Earths history.  I want to keep my story safe for future generations.  So they can read about one man who decided to move somewhere new for love.

Since this was a little off topic I will try to get another entry up around Wednesday.  Until then enjoy your week.

Having been sick…

I thought I was getting easy off in the cold department this winter.  Then last Monday my turn came up.  Because I have been sick most of this week I do not have much to write about this week.  My highlights were being asleep and going to class.

Not much to talk about when it comes to sleeping.  I did have some interesting dreams that I can hardly remember.  Except for the image of someone pulling a bus full of people with a bicycle.  Which reminds me of something I learned recently.  Apparently, when you dream, everyone you meet in your dream is someone you have seen in real life.  Perhaps someone you passed on the street or while walking though the store.  I am not sure if I believe that is the case for everyone, but it certainly makes sense for me.  My dreams are typically very vivid and usually resemble normal life.  I think I should read up on the faces you see in your dreams.

When it comes to my German class there is not much to write about either.  At least not much I can share.  I missed a day of class because I felt too ill to be there.  The other days we prepared for our March B1 exam and moved onto a chapter about apartments and the objects in them.  Which includes a lot of sentences like, Meine Brille ist auf der Zeitung (My glasses are on the newspaper).

To wrap this up I want to include some pictures of my cat playing with a marshmallow.  Since becoming an indoor cat again she has not been very active.  Her favorite toy was a 20-sided dice until she lost it somewhere in the house.  Anni and I both found it very funny watching her play with the marshmallow.  Especially when it was stuck to one of her claws.

A New Year’s Resolution

Welcome to myGermanyMove.com.  Since this is the first post for 2011 I thought I would share some thoughts on improving my blog.  Frankly I feel like I could be doing a better job by making the content a lot more interesting for you.  I have received a lot of feedback from people about how much they enjoy reading my articles and that makes me want to step it up in the coming year.  Being a blog about my life here in Germany there are a couple things I can do to improve the blog:

Post more frequently:  A lot of people say it is not about how often you post, but the quality of what you have written.  Which is completely true, but only a part of the story.  Knowing there is something new makes coming back a little bit easier.  So, starting this weekend my goal is to have something new every weekend.  I have already made a list of 7 topics I can write about.

Post more pictures: When we were in the United States in October my friend Matt asked that I post more pictures online.  A little visual eye candy makes reading a story just that much easier.  Since then I have tried to always include a related picture.

Facebook connections: To make it easier to follow what is going on I will be creating a Facebook fan page.  Once the page is created I will post more details.

If there is something you would like to see leave a note in the comments or send me a message.  Hearing from you brings more depth to this blog and brightens my day.

Before I go I want to include some pictures I have taken over the last two weeks.

See you next weekend!
